Northwind Exhibits Collage Works *
(* Entering? Remember entries are due to Northwind on Feb. 27th or 28th,
3:00 – 5:00 P.M.)
From March 4th – April 11th, Northwind Arts Center (2409 Jefferson St.,
Port Townsend) will exhibit its newest show, "Textures, Shapes & Edges:
Contemporary Collage", a juried show of collage and assemblage. The word
"collage" is taken from the French verb "coller", which means to paste or
glue. Assemblage is the three-dimensional equivalent of collage and can be
traced back to early 20th century modernism. It gained acceptance with a 1961
Museum of Modern Art exhibition titled, "The Art of Assemblage", that showed
pieces of art that were assembled rather than painted, drawn, modeled or
carved.
The juror for this show is Carol Bleistein. This National Collage Society
artist has been an artist, teacher, and juror for over 25 years and has shown
her work in over 300 National, International, and solo exhibitions. About the
medium she says, "Collage is a compositionally demanding medium that
continually challenges an artist to be aware of changing shapes and their
relationship to the whole."
Northwind Arts Center (2409 Jefferson St.) is open Friday through Monday,
Noon to 5:00 P.M.
"Coffee, Talk, & Dessert" Series
In conjunction with this show, there will be a "Coffee, Talk, & Dessert
Evening" at the Arts Center on Friday, March 4th at 7:00 P.M. The show’s
juror will present a lecture about the medium of collage. There is a
suggested donation of $3.00 for Jefferson Arts Alliance members and $6.00 for
non-members. For more information, please call the Arts Center at (360)

Northwind Fun(d) Raiser! Creative Opportunity! Fun(d) Raiser!
Call for entries- Event planner, Deedra Ludwig, has devised a clever
fundraiser to help Northwind. She would like a contribution/donation of 1 – 3
postcard size works (4 inches X 6 inches, unframed) of art for the Northwind
Arts Center’s fundraiser, "Postcards to Port Townsend." Any medium… painting,
collage, ink, graphite, photos, encaustic, watercolor. Please sign the works
on the back with your city location and e-mail or mailing address. These are
due at Northwind now through September 15, 2005.
The identity of the artist will be kept secret, so that the viewer may
select what they are attracted to without knowing the artist who created it.

a first come first serve basis. Please pass this on-

Arts Center Volunteer Spotlight
Northwind could not operate without its volunteers. This month our
spotlight shines on Sandy Guinup. She moved to Port Townsend over 6 years
ago, after retiring from an educational job in Southern California. At one
time during her career, she was an art teacher. Sandy says, "Art has been
part of my life from the get-go and will be so until I am long-gone." She has
college degrees in the art field, having taken courses in a myriad of art
areas, plus taking 4 years of classes here in Port Townsend, mostly from
Jeanette Best. "Jeanette played a big influence in getting me involved in the
local art scene." Sandy continues, "I usually enter my watercolor paintings
in Northwind’s juried shows and volunteer several times each month as a
docent. I had a new house built last year so that I would finally have a nice
art studio. I even have an art cat. So you can see that art is a big part of
my life."
A SPECIAL THANK YOU: Many of you have commented on how great the Northwind
Gallery looks. We would like to recognize and thank Diane Roberts for her
work in restoring one of our walls that was badly damaged during an
exhibition. Thank-you Diane for all your efforts.
